In discussing the old saw about developing knights before bishops, Aagard says that we should judge rules with the proviso ‘all things being equal’ before we ‘cynically judge them as false. Aagaard’s books seem to have a “you must be this tall to ride” feel to them especially 2, 3 and 5 and are catered to above-average players.
Calculation, or something else …? The whole idea is absurd. Or does the rule, if applied as it has been in the past, merely limit our ability to make the correct, creative decision? The impression given is “This is not meant to be fun!
